Ludus: Roman checkers

1. Red moves first; players take turns.
2. Every piece, the king included, slides any distance along a row or column — no diagonals, no jumping.
3. Capture an enemy piece by trapping it between two of yours.
4. Win by capturing the enemy king, which is taken when it can't move in any direction.

Ludus: Roman checkers revives a strategy game loved in ancient Rome, above all by its legionnaires. Every piece, including the king — the legion's eagle — moves any distance in a straight line horizontally or vertically, like a rook, but never diagonally and never over other pieces. Captures work by sandwiching: trap an enemy piece between two of your own and it's taken. You win by capturing the enemy king, which falls when it's hemmed in with no legal move, or by wiping out as many enemy pieces as possible. Red always moves first. Play against the computer, with a friend on the same device, or online, and you can even watch other players' games.
